About Barbara LeMay
Rising star Barbara LeMay is one of opera’s most compelling young singers. Equally deft with tragedy and comedy, her beautiful voice and magnetic personality capture audience imaginations. Educated at Ball State University and Yale University, principal roles have included Charlotte in Werther, Lucretia in The Rape of Lucretia, Prinz Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Bersi in Andrea Chénier, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, La Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica, Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte, Berta in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Aurelia in The Chocolate Soldier, and Mezzo no. 2 in the World Premiere of Line Tjørnhøj’s chamber opera Oration. She has also been heard as Gertrude in Hansel and Gretel, Dame Quickly in Falstaff, Zita in Gianni Schicchi, Camilla in Il giovedì grasso, Giovanna in Rigoletto, La voix de la mère in Les contes d’Hoffman, Annina in La Traviata, Emily in The Ballad of Baby Doe, Marta in Iolanta, Mrs. Nolan in The Medium, and The Nurse in Central Park–”Strawberry Fields”.
In concert, Ms. LeMay has performed as mezzo and alto soloist in Elijah, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Mass in C, The Messiah, Vivaldi’s Beatus Vir and Gloria, Pergolesi’s Salve Regina, and the Requiems of Durufle and Stravinsky. A winner of awards in the Connecticut District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Annamaria Saritelli-DiPanni Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Awards, and from Mu Phi Epsilon, Ms. LeMay has worked with a number of prestigious performing organizations, including New York City Opera, Pine Mountain Music Festival, Amarillo Opera, Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, Elgin O*P*E*R*A, and Opera Company of Brooklyn, St. Petersburg (FL) Opera, Liederkranz Opera Theatre and has performed as a Young Artist with Glimmerglass Opera and Opera Theatre of Lucca.
